Retail Giant Officially Goes Fur-Free Online and in Stores

After learning from PETA how animals are electrocuted, bludgeoned, and skinned alive for their fur, Sierra Trading Post has agreed to go 100 percent fur-free. The Cheyenne-based retailer, which specializes in active lifestyle products and has eight locations across several states, joins hundreds of other companies that have banned fur—including REI, Helly Hansen, Patagonia, The North Face, PUMA, Columbia Sportswear, QVC, Overstock.com, Zappos, and many more.

“By banning fur, Sierra Trading Post has made a world of difference for animals who are caged, shocked, beaten, and skinned for coats, collars, and cuffs,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on shoppers to go fur-free—and to stick to kind retailers that have done the same.”

Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages, without access to basic necessities like food and clean water. Those who are caught in steel-jaw traps—which slam shut on an animal’s leg, often down to the bone, causing excruciating pain—may attempt to chew off their own limbs to escape. If trapped animals do not die from blood loss, infection, or gangrene, trappers strangle, beat, or stomp them to death.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—encourages all caring people to leave real fur on animals.
