Bedford Firefighters Receive PETA Award for Saving Dog From House Fire

Volunteer First Responders Use Specially Designed Oxygen Mask to Revive Unresponsive Canine

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Bedford Township Fire Department after volunteer firefighters responded to a house fire in the 8200 block of Chamberlain Drive last week. Firefighters discovered Dakota, a dog lying unresponsive in the smoke-filled home, rushed him outside, and used a specially designed animal oxygen mask to revive him—the first time the department has used the special equipment.

“These firefighters had the know-how and the kindness to make sure that this dog survived his terrifying ordeal,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their brave actions will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—encourages all animal guardians to put a sign on doors or windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs, cats, and other animal companions. Families can order stickers from the PETA Catalog or make their own.

The Bedford Township Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
