‘Bruised’ and ‘Bloody,’ Joanna Krupa Tells the Naked Truth About Wool

Supermodel’s New PETA Campaign Shines a Spotlight on Sheep Kicked, Beaten, and Killed for Sweaters, Scarves, and Coats

Wearing nothing but special-effects makeup, leaving her “battered” and “bloody,” supermodel Joanna Krupa stars in a brand-new PETA ad in which she clutches what appears to be the bleeding body of a violently sheared lamb above the words “Wool: The Naked Truth.”

“When human beings are abused and beaten, we can ask for help, can call the police, can ask a family member, can ask a friend, ‘Please help me.’ Sheep beaten and abused for wool need someone on their side, too,” says Krupa. “My PETA ad may be shocking to look at, but I hope it will open people’s eyes and encourage them to choose kind, wool-free fashion.”

In the last two years, PETA has released five exposés recorded at 37 wool industry facilities on three continents, revealing that sheep are mutilated, abused, and skinned alive—even for “responsibly sourced” wool on so-called “sustainable” farms. Some sheep even die from the abuse, such as one whose neck was twisted by a shearer who confessed, “I get angry.”

In an exclusive video interview with PETA, Krupa reveals what made her decide to go wool-free: PETA’s exposés of the international wool industry. “I had no idea that people were so cruel,” says Krupa. “They beat these sheep in these wool farms. Some of them get slammed, break their necks. Millions of them each year. They end up dying. They’re shearing the animals so quickly that they cut them open sometimes, and they sew them without any painkillers.”

Krupa is one of a growing list of celebrities—including Charlize Theron, Jona Weinhofen, Eva Mendes, Penélope Cruz, and many more—who’ve teamed up with PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear.”
