POTUS Visit Prompts PETA Offer of ‘Give Peas a Chance’ Banner for Mosque

In response to President Barack Obama’s first presidential visit to a U.S. mosque today, PETA is sending the Islamic Society of Baltimore a banner that will echo the president’s call for empathy and compassion:

“We praise President Obama for making the point that marginalization and violence stem from a lack of empathy for those whom we perceive as different from us,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “There is indeed a vital need for peace and understanding for all in our communities, so PETA hopes to spark discussion about how we can learn to relate better to our fellow human beings by starting to relate to who is on our plate.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that animals used for food experience joy, pain, fear, love, and grief and also value their lives just as humans do. More information about PETA is available at PETA.org.
