February 23 may officially be Spay Day—but every day in February and March will be Spay Day at PETA’s mobile veterinary clinics, where families will pay just $15 to “fix” cats, in honor of the 15th anniversary of PETA’s mobile clinic program, and just $35 to “fix” dogs, in honor of PETA’s 35th anniversary.
Appointments can be made by calling 757-622-7382, extension 3, or visiting PETA.org/SpayNeuter.
“There’s no better way to celebrate PETA’s milestones than by helping our community combat the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis through prevention,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Spay Day is the perfect time to take action to prevent more puppies and kittens from being born into a world with no room for them.”
Every year, animal shelters are forced to euthanize millions of homeless cats, dogs, and other animals—including tens of thousands in Virginia—for lack of decent homes. Spaying and neutering prevents animals from contributing to the overpopulation crisis. In addition, sterilized animals live longer and happier lives, are less likely to develop cancer of the reproductive system, and—in the case of neutered males—are less likely to roam or fight.
Since 2001, PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has provided low-cost spay/neuter services to more than 123,000 dogs and cats, including 11,929 in 2015.
PETA’s clinics currently park at locations in Virginia such as Boykins, Chesapeake, the Eastern Shore, Emporia, Franklin, Gloucester, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, Surry, Wakefield, and Windsor. PETA will also hold a 12-hour “Spay-a-Thon” at its Norfolk headquarters on Spay Day, February 23, with further details to be announced in mid-February.
