New Parkway Theater Ranked Among Top Five Vegan-Friendly Movie Theaters in U.S.
In Run-Up to the Oscars, PETA Picks Top Theaters That Show a Reel Commitment to Meeting Moviegoers’ Hunger for Plant-Based Fare

As moviegoers flock to cinemas in advance of the 88th Academy Awards, PETA is recognizing the top five vegan-friendly movie theaters in the U.S., all of which offer far more than the usual “accidentally vegan” snacks such as popcorn, pretzels, soda, and Sour Patch Kids candies. Taking the number two spot is Oakland’s New Parkway Theater, thanks to its delicious menu packed with vegan comfort foods.
“PETA’s list shows that the vegan scene is hopping—including at local movie houses,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “When it comes to vegan fare at The New Parkway Theater, the hardest thing is deciding whether to follow the artichoke with white-bean ragout with the refreshing smoothie of the week or a pint of lavender lemonade kombucha.”
Other vegan options on The New Parkway Theater’s menu include the garlic herb fries with aioli and the veggie burger with fresh herbs. The New Parkway Theater is an independent theater that offers patrons the chance to chow down on comfort food while watching the silver screen on a big, comfy couch. It offers weekly activities to the community, like open mic night, game night, trivia nights, and more!
Taking the number one spot in PETA’s roundup is Sun-Ray Cinema in Jacksonville, Florida. Central Cinema in Seattle came in third place, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas, nabbed fourth place. FilmScene in Iowa City, Iowa, rounds out the top five, and an honorable mention goes to Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. in Asheville, North Carolina.
Each winner will receive a framed certificate and a letter of congratulations from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat.”
