Matt and Kim Star in New peta2 Campaign: ‘Adoption Is Love!’

Indie Rock Duo Stress Lifesaving Importance of ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop’ and Pitch ‘Tinder for Dogs’ in New Video Interview

If a dog-adoption Tinder app existed, Kim of Matt and Kim “would be swiping right all day”—at least that’s what Matt says in a new video interview with peta2, PETA’s youth division. That may be why the indie rock duo were eager to team up with peta2 for a new ad in which they appear sitting on the steps of their Brooklyn brownstone with rescued pup Maggie next to the words “Adoption Is Love. Find Your Own Biggest Fan at Your Local Animal Shelter.”

In the video, set to the duo’s hit song “Let’s Go,” Kim talks about why adoption is so important. “There are so many shelters who are trying to save dogs who need good homes, and if they don’t find homes, certain shelters have to put them down,” she says. “[T]he whole idea behind ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop’ is that you’re not purchasing something—you’re saving someone.”

That’s why Matt suggests visiting local animal shelters and finding out which dogs will be the best match for you. “There’s probably someone you’re going to match up with, [who’s] gonna be the yin to your yang,” he says.

The pair also share one of their favorite Brooklyn activities: “People know that we’re fans of dogs. They know that we lurk around the dog park,” says Matt. “I mean, we don’t go into the park. … That’s like going into a playground when you don’t have a kid. … But we’ll get coffee and just hang out and be like, ‘Look at the coat on that one.’”

Matt and Kim join a growing list of musicians—including RZA, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, and members of Rise Against, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, and Manchester Orchestra—who’ve teamed up with peta2 (whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”) to promote kindness to animals.
