It was the photo seen around the world: After McKinney firefighters successfully retrieved a man and his dog, Duke, from rising floodwaters, Duke jumped up and “kissed” his rescuer. On Tuesday, at the McKinney City Council meeting, PETA will present the McKinney Fire Department with its Compassionate Fire Department Award.
Where: McKinney City Council Chambers, 222 N. Tennessee St. (between Hunt and W. Herndon streets), McKinney
When: Tuesday, January 5, 6 p.m.
“The McKinney Fire Department had the compassion, know-how, and bravery it took to save this dog and the man who loves him from a treacherous flood,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is honoring these courageous rescuers for setting an example of kindness for people around the world.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—previously sent the McKinney Fire Department a box of delicious vegan cookies and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet in thanks for the firefighters’ actions.
