‘Elves’ to Send SeaWorld a Wagon Full of Coal for Christmas

On Wednesday, a group of PETA members dressed as Santa’s “elves” will deliver a wagon full of coal—complete with a sign proclaiming, “Coal for SeaWorld Cruelty”—to a San Diego post office to be delivered to SeaWorld, just in time for Christmas.

“The orcas in SeaWorld’s concrete prisons won’t have a merry Christmas until the park finally agrees to build coastal sanctuaries for them,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “That’s why PETA’s ‘elves’ are urging families to keep SeaWorld out of their holiday travel plans and on their ‘Naughty’ lists, where it belongs.”
In the wild, orcas work cooperatively to find food, share intricate relationships, and traverse vast expanses of ocean every day. At SeaWorld, they’re grouped incompatibly in tiny concrete tanks, where they attack each other and break their teeth on tank walls out of frustration. Just this week, an orca at SeaWorld San Antonio named Unna died from an infection common in orcas in captivity—making her the 38th to die far short of her natural life expectancy at SeaWorld. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—is calling on the company to develop ocean sanctuaries in which the orcas could be rehabilitated and finally have the opportunity to engage in natural behavior.
