Every year, peta2, PETA’s youth division, recognizes the best, brightest, and most animal-friendly companies, celebrities, and activists—and it doesn’t get much better or brighter than Daiya. The Vancouver-based company is taking home the title of Best New Vegan Food Item in the 10th Annual Libby Awards (“Libby” is short for “liberation”—as in animal liberation) for its Deluxe Alfredo Style Cheezy Mac, a boxed vegan macaroni and “cheese” meal that’s complete with gluten-free pasta and decadently creamy (not powdered) “cheese” sauce.
“Daiya’s deluxe Cheezy Mac makes it easier than ever for teens to enjoy a classic after-school treat without harming any animals,” says PETA Senior Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “As the competitive field for peta2’s awards demonstrates, companies across North America are working hard to feed the market’s growing hunger for delicious vegan food.”
In addition to Daiya’s win for Best New Vegan Food Item, its Key Lime Cheezecake narrowly missed nabbing the title of Best Vegan Dessert, making Daiya one of only a handful of companies to receive multiple nominations this year.
The 10th Annual Libby Awards recognize winners in 21 categories, including Most Animal-Friendly Band, Best Vegan Meat, and Best Vegan “Dude” Product. Visitors to peta2.com/Libbys cast votes to help peta2 decide whom it would choose as Libby Award winners. peta2—whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”—based its selections on several factors, including vote count.
