A pool of “blood” will surround a prop “calf” and a gigantic carton proclaiming, “Milk Is Murder,” on Thursday, when a group of PETA supporters will gather outside the BC Dairy Industry Conference. PETA’s carton lists some of the most common “ingredients” found in cow’s milk, including newborn calves torn from their mothers just hours after birth, male calves auctioned off for meat at just 1 week old, and female cows sent to slaughter when their milk production declines at 5 years of age—far short of their natural 25-year life expectancy.
When: Thursday, November 26, 12 p.m.
Where: In front of the Fairmont Waterfront, 900 Canada Pl., Vancouver
“Every carton of milk contains a hidden ingredient, and that’s a lifetime of deprivation and suffering for mother cows and the calves who are stolen from them,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on consumers everywhere to swap cruelly produced dairy foods for healthy, humane plant-based milks, yogurts, and cheeses.”
As PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out, mother cows have been heard calling for their stolen calves for days. The calves’ sensitive horn buds are burned off with hot irons or caustic paste, and female cows spend their lives developing painful sores from standing on concrete floors and are milked two or three times a day for 305 days of the year.
