PETA and Pamela Anderson to Urge ‘No’ Vote on SeaWorld’s Proposed New Orca Tanks

As the California Coastal Commission prepares to vote on SeaWorld’s proposed Blue World Project on Thursday, Pamela Anderson will join hundreds of PETA supporters in urging the commission to vote down the company’s latest effort to rebrand its widely opposed marine-mammal exhibits. During the meeting, PETA, marine biologists, and Anderson will present arguments that’ll be echoed by the hundreds of others in attendance. SeaWorld has admitted that its proposal would allow the controversial park to display even more orcas in concrete tanks of chemically treated water, and the new tanks will fuel the unregulated growth of its orca-breeding program.

“Look closely at SeaWorld’s plan, and you can see that it’s designed to enhance the tourist experience, not that of the animals,” says Anderson. “SeaWorld is clinging desperately to the past—a time before the public understood these complex and intelligent animals—but no one can ignore the fact that captive orcas are going insane and that they suffer terribly when they’re separated from their families. If SeaWorld truly cared about animals, it would move the orcas to seaside sanctuaries.”
More than 120,000 supporters of PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—have written to the California Coastal Commission in opposition to SeaWorld’s plan.
