When the brothers of Brown University’s Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) fraternity heard about the Vegan Frat Challenge hosted by peta2, PETA’s youth division, they rushed to take the pledge. That’s why this week, AEPi’s house is sporting an enormous banner on the front proclaiming, “This House Is Vegan #VeganFratChallenge,” and its kitchen has been stocked with vegan food donated by Beyond Meat, Daiya, and vegan-friendly Providence restaurants.
For a full week, the brothers and peta2 will post live updates on social media as frat members, their friends, other students, and members of the community enjoy vegan food. And at the end of the week, AEPi will host a vegan barbecue that’s open to all students, staff, and members of the media.
The event will take place on the front porch of AEPi’s house (The Marcy House) on Saturday, October 3, at 4 p.m.
“The brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi are part of a global trend of cruelty-free, eco-friendly vegan eating,” says peta2 Senior Director Marta Holmberg. “peta2 is proud to team up with them to show how everything from buffalo ‘wings’ to breakfast burritos can be dished up without any meat, eggs, or dairy foods.”
peta2—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—will be on site at the AEPi house all week to help students prepare vegan versions of college favorites, including bagels with vegan cream cheese, Beyond Meat buffalo “chicken” salad, Tofurky sandwiches, Daiya “cheese” pizzas, and more—all made with ingredients that can be found at Whole Foods and other local grocery stores. AEPi brothers on the go will be able to hit up Providence’s many vegan-friendly restaurants, such as Nice Slice, Kabob and Curry, Veggie Fun, and Like No Udder.
