A Compassionate Action Award is on its way from PETA to Portland resident Ted Nelson, who spotted 5-year-old dog Mordy perched precariously on a 14th-story balcony across the street. Sensing his distress, Nelson was quick to position himself underneath the balcony and was able to catch the dog—saving his life—when he toppled from the ledge. Mordy is recovering with his family with only a few bruises to show for his ordeal, and Nelson will receive a framed certificate and a box of delicious vegan cookies.
“Nelson acted with no time to lose, and his quick thinking saved this dog from a horrific death,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes his kindness will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
Mordy isn’t the first animal Nelson has saved from a high ledge: After spotting a cat unattended on a balcony, he persuaded her guardians to take her indoors. PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” reminds all dog guardians to make sure that their yards and balconies are secure—with sturdy fencing and no potentially poisonous plants or other materials—and never to leave animals outside unattended.
