Courtesy of PETA, a Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way to the Town of Beloit Fire Department after firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire. After the human occupants of the house arrived and informed first responders that the dog, who was locked in a kennel, was trapped inside, three firefighters rushed in to retrieve him. They then provided him with oxygen.
“Thanks to these courageous firefighters, this dog was spared a painful, terrifying death,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their determination will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that all dogs need regular exercise and attention and should never be left to languish in a crate. The group also encourages all animal guardians to put a sign on doors or windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs, cats, and other animal companions. Families can order stickers from the PETA Catalog or make their own.
The Town of Beloit Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
