Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk:
While most Dr. Seuss books are timeless, the world has changed a lot since What Pet Should I Get? was first written. Now, kind families know that buying a puppy from a pet store means that a dog in an animal shelter loses his or her chance to find a home. Fortunately, Theodor Seuss Geisel’s publisher agreed with PETA, and the resulting pro-adoption note is the perfect 21st century update to the latest addition to the Dr. Seuss canon.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has more information about adoption on its website. Of particular concern to us is the plight of caged birds. Caging birds was popularized by the devastating wild-bird trade decades ago and causes great stress to animals whose very nature is to fly and socialize as part of a flock.
