This evening, St. Francis of Assisi Parish will team up with PETA to kick off its new Creation Care Program, a series of events that will teach the congregation and community how to help animals through their everyday choices. Its very first event will be a vegan fish dinner—featuring Gardein’s award-winning, tasty fishless filets as well as vegan tartar sauce and coconut-lime slaw served on tortillas and garnished with pickled red onion and mango.

The Creation Care Program is named for the Genesis mandate that humanity be stewards of the planet—in other words, care for God’s creation. Future events will include screenings of animal documentaries Blackfish and Peaceable Kingdom, in addition to the inaugural dinner—all of which will be free and open to members of the public.

“The biblical mandate of creation care means to protect the natural world, and there’s no better way to kick off this new program than with a delicious vegan dinner that spares animals immense suffering,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA’s Christian outreach division, Jesus People for Animals, looks forward to working with St. Francis of Assisi Parish to help the Denver community make kind choices for animals about what we eat, wear, and buy.”

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” and JesusPeopleForAnimals.com offers a variety of potluck-ready vegan recipes that spare the lives of living, feeling animals such as fish, who are complex beings who have personalities, communicate, form bonds with each other, and even use tools.
