So far this year, seven to 10 goslings have vanished from Harvey County’s West Park while others have been spotted with broken legs and other injuries, including fish hooks imbedded in their chests, wings, and legs. Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incidents, which also violate the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918—so PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
“Too many geese have already suffered, and those who have been stolen may be in grave danger,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about who has hurt and kidnapped these gentle birds to come forward now. Police may still be able to save the missing geese from a gruesome fate.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—offers tips for helping wildlife and reporting cruelty to animals on its website.
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call 911 and inform a park ranger.
