PETA Statement re Passing of North Carolina’s ‘Ag-Gag’ Bill

The following statement is from PETA regarding today’s override of Gov. Pat McCrory’s veto of House Bill 405, North Carolina’s “ag-gag” bill, which will penalize people who expose criminal abuse of animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses, laboratories, and other facilities.

It is shameful that even after Gov. McCrory vetoed this bill, the North Carolina legislature has voted to cover up cruelty to animals. As Americans, we have a right to know what goes on behind closed doors in the meat industry—and it should disturb all kind people to realize that the meat that ends up on our plates is the product of such extreme cruelty that cameras aren’t allowed to film it. PETA will continue to oppose “ag-gag” bills wherever they pop up in the U.S. and strive to have them defeated, as has already occurred in 19 states.
