PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel Delcianna Winders released a statement about the city council’s passage this evening of a ban on bullhooks used against elephants:

Thanks to the Richmond City Council and the city’s compassionate residents, soon elephants will no longer be subjected to abuse and deprivation as part of circuses that come to town. PETA looks forward to seeing more cities across the country follow Richmond’s lead by banning bullhooks—the sharp weapons that are used to beat elephants into submission.
