Saying It Simply: ‘#SeaWorldSucks’ Banner Will Fly Over Fiesta Parade

A massive banner proclaiming, “Captivity: No Fiesta 4 Orcas #SeaWorldSucks,” will fly over the Battle of Flowers Parade—the nation’s second largest parade—during San Antonio’s annual Fiesta on Friday, courtesy of generous local PETA supporters. PETA wants to remind everyone that while humans are out and about, listening to music and having fun, SeaWorld is causing orcas to suffer from extreme sensory deprivation by imprisoning them in cramped concrete tanks and forcing them to perform circus-style tricks for food—a fact that should keep families away from SeaWorld’s shows.

“Fiesta commemorates the fight for freedom in Texas, and today, PETA is fighting for freedom for the orcas who are denied everything that’s natural and important to them at SeaWorld,” says PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel Delcianna Winders. “No one who loves animals should ever buy a ticket to any show that uses and abuses sensitive marine mammals.”
At least 37 orcas have died at U.S. SeaWorld parks and at an affiliated facility from causes such as severe trauma and intestinal gangrene. Many lash out at each other or harm themselves out of frustration. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—is calling on SeaWorld to develop ocean sanctuaries in which orcas could be rehabilitated and finally have the opportunity to engage in natural behavior that visitors could observe from nearby “whale watching” centers.
