Vegan Hot Brown Melt and Garlic ‘Cheese’ Grits Help Restaurant-on-Wheels Take Top Honors

The rise of vegan-friendly food trucks is putting healthy, humane, and convenient foods in the hands of more people on the go than ever, and with that in mind, PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—is unveiling its Top Five Vegan Food Trucks, and Louisville’s V-Grits is one of the outstanding hotspots on PETA’s list.
Owner Kristina Addington serves up a delicious spread of all-vegan Southern favorites, including the Hot Brown Melt—a vegan version of Louisville’s iconic dish, made with vegan bacon and turkey and topped with tomato and dairy-free Mornay sauce. Other delectable offerings include the BBQ Sliders, which are stuffed with jackfruit, cilantro, and coleslaw. Roasted garlic “cheese” grits, collard greens, and biscuits with vegan sawmill gravy round out a rotating menu that also boasts mouthwatering desserts: vegan coconut cream cake and banana pudding.
“V-Grits more than delivers on scrumptious, hearty plant-based foods with a Southern twist,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “With creative menus that are as delicious as they are convenient for diners on the go, all-vegan food trucks are helping more people spare animals suffering and improve their own health.”
The other winners include Seed on the Go—owned by Jerri Hastey, mother to longtime vegan actor Jessica Chastain—which steals hearts in California’s Sonoma County with offerings that include a chia tapioca parfait. Also in the count are Detroit’s Shimmy Shack, known for its classic American lentil burger and other family favorites; Austin’s BBQ Revolution, which serves authentic Texan BBQ, all-vegan style; and Gmonkey Mobile in Connecticut, whose Feisty Monkey Peanut Soba Noodles, served over a bed of greens and topped with cilantro house dressing, is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Each winner will receive a framed certificate.
