Eight-year-old Signal Hill resident Genesis Butler has just been named one of the top four female finalists in PETA Kids’ 2015 Cutest Vegan Kids contest—and now it’s up to voters to help PETA Kids decide whether it should select her to take home the top prize. Two winners—one girl and one boy—will each receive a trophy, a cruelty-free prize pack, and a year’s worth of bragging rights.
Genesis chose to leave animals off her plate for good when she was only 3, and she hasn’t stopped sharing her kind choices with others. She has persuaded her entire family and many friends to go vegan, and she’s only getting started: She’s currently hard at work on a proposal for a districtwide Meatless Mondays program to be implemented at all the schools in the Long Beach Unified School District.
“Genesis’ passionate dedication to helping animals is already an inspiration to people of all ages,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All the kids who entered the contest are winners in PETA Kids’ book because they’ve made the switch to healthier, animal-friendly foods.”
More and more people go vegan every year. Besides the indisputable health benefits of ditching meat and other unhealthy animal products, vegans, on average, have a smaller carbon footprint than their meat-eating counterparts, and each vegan saves the lives of more than 100 animals each year.
Voting on the finalists to help PETA Kids decide whom it should choose as the winners runs until April 10, and the two winners will be announced on April 13. PETA Kids, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” will select the winners based on several factors, including vote count. See the full contest details here.
