Imagine what it would be like to go from being chained 24/7 to being held in the arms of someone whose warm home is festooned with “Welcome Home” signs and offers a comfy bed and toys galore. A new video from PETA, available here, describes how Cora—a dog who was chained and shivering in a snow-covered backyard—was whisked to safety on Christmas Eve and adopted into an adoring new home.
PETA fieldworker Heather Johnson describes in the video how Cora spent her early life. Day and night, she could only watch from her cold, wet patch of dirt as her owners came and went and enjoyed the warmth of their house. While PETA fieldworkers visited Cora regularly—making sure that she had the basics, taking her treats and fresh straw bedding, and even getting her spayed—it was only when they discovered that the chain holding her fast had become painfully embedded in her neck that Cora’s owners agreed to let PETA remove the chain and whisk her away to spend Christmas in comfort. Johnson herself took Cora home on Christmas Eve, and the playful pup experienced her first moments as part of a family indoors, even tearing opening presents from her foster “mom.” Once her neck had healed, she was introduced to her forever family—a tear-jerking moment that you can watch for yourself at the video’s close.
“Now that she’s found her forever home, Cora’s days are filled with playful romps and a regular dose of affection and attention,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Her story is one of the many reasons why PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to abuse in any way’—works to help ‘backyard dogs’ across the country.”
