Following discussions with PETA and a recent groundbreaking exposé revealing that live rabbits’ fur is ripped out of their skin on angora farms, retailer Le Château agreed to permanently ban the sale of angora wool on its website and at all 222 store locations. This decision follows on the heels of more than 80 other companies that have pledged to ban angora.
“As shoppers turn their backs on angora in droves, Le Château’s kind choice makes sound business sense,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on retailers still profiting from the cruel abuse of rabbits and other animals to move with the times and drop the cruel items, as Le Château and dozens of other businesses have done.”
As revealed by PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”— in its exposé of a PETA Asia investigation, rabbits used for angora often scream in pain as their fur is ripped out, while others are cut or sheared and invariably wounded by the sharp tools as they struggle desperately to escape. In addition, the angora-farming industry condemns these intelligent, social animals to years of isolation in small, filthy wire cages.
Le Château joins more than 80 top brands and retailers—including French Connection, Zara, Calvin Klein, H&M, and Tommy Hilfiger—that have permanently banned angora wool as a result of PETA Asia’s investigation.
