On Wednesday, a pinup sweater girl will turn heads with a cheeky striptease at a busy Toronto intersection, where she’ll peel off a sexy wool-free sweater and skirt to reveal a vintage-style ensemble that’s sure to raise chilly temperatures by a few degrees in front of a backdrop proclaiming, “Be a Sweater Sweetie: Go Wool-Free.” PETA hopes to remind attendees of Toronto’s fashion week that all caring fashion enthusiasts should leave wool on the sheep this spring.
When: Wednesday, March 25, 12 p.m. sharp, rain or shine
Where: The southwest corner of Yonge and Dundas streets, Toronto
“Every wool sweater is the product of the abuse of vulnerable, gentle sheep—a reality that would appall most kind shoppers,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on consumers everywhere to drop wool in favour of the many warm, high-end, cruelty-free fabrics on the market.”
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear,” released an international exposé of the wool industry in Australia—the source of 90 percent of the world’s merino wool—and the U.S. that revealed that workers violently punched scared sheep in the face, stomped and stood on the animals’ heads and necks, and beat and jabbed them in the face with electric clippers and a hammer. Some sheep even died from the abuse, including one whose neck was twisted until the animal died.
