A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way to the Bowling Green Fire Division for its courageous rescue of Copper, a dog who had fallen through the ice on a frozen pond last Tuesday. After receiving a harrowing call from Copper’s guardian saying that the dog was in the pond, firefighters rushed to the scene. They reached Copper just as he slipped beneath the frigid water. But a rescuer was able to grab one of his paws and pull him back to the surface just in time, and he was reunited with his family.
“This dog survived a life-threatening, terrifying ordeal thanks to these firefighters’ quick-thinking actions,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their determination and bravery inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—reminds all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on animals when they’re outdoors, particularly puppies who are still learning to navigate their environment.
The firefighters will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan chocolates, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.
