How Much Water Does It Take to Make One Steak?
In observance of World Water Day, PETA Germany placed this aqueous installation on the sidewalk of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz to let people know that it takes over 1,000 gallons of water to produce just one steak.
Between irrigating the crops that farmed animals eat, providing billions of animals with drinking water each year, and washing away the filth in factory farms, transport trucks, and slaughterhouses, the farmed-animal industry places a tremendous strain on our water supply. Nearly half of all the water used in the United States goes toward raising animals for food.
Here’s proof that meat wastes water:
- It takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of meat.
- Only 25 gallons of water are required to grow 1 pound of wheat.
- You can save more water by not eating a pound of meat than you can by not showering for six months!
