Trumansburg Firefighters Receive PETA Award for Rescuing Dog From Icy Lake

First Responders Save Beloved Canine From Chilling Fate

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way to the Trumansburg Fire Department for its courageous rescue of Sadie, a dog who chased a duck onto a frozen lake at Taughannock Falls State Park and became stranded there. Two rescuers traversed the frozen water, falling through the ice multiple times before they were able to call Sadie to them and pull her to safety. She’s now recovering at home with her family.

“The Trumansburg Fire Department’s quick and determined rescue of this lucky dog meant the difference between life and death for her,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this will inspire others to take a page from the firefighters’ book and always come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—reminds all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they’re outdoors.

The Trumansburg Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan chocolates, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
