Milwaukee Firefighters Receive PETA Award for Rescuing Dog From Ice Floe

First Responders Save Beloved Companion From Chilling Fate

Compassionate Fire Department awards are on their way to two local fire departments—the Cudahy Fire Department and the St. Francis Fire Department—for their harrowing rescue of Genevieve, a dog stranded on the ice in Lake Michigan. Rescuers spent four hours navigating frigid, treacherous conditions before they were able to pull Genevieve to safety. She is now in good condition and is resting at home with her family.

In recognition of the rescuers’ efforts, PETA is sending each department an award certificate, a box of vegan chocolates, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.

“This lucky dog is alive today, thanks to the courage and determination of these rescuers,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” reminds all dog guardians to be sure to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they’re outside.
