A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way to the Henrico County Division of Fire for rescuing a duck stranded on a frozen retention pond. After receiving a call from a concerned bystander, members of the division’s water-rescue unit rushed to the scene to retrieve the frightened and exhausted bird from the ice. The duck is reportedly recovering at a local animal-care facility.
To thank the rescuers for their effort, PETA is sending the division a framed certificate, along with a box of delicious vegan chocolates and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
“This division’s quick and courageous action meant the difference between life and death for this duck,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this will inspire others to take a page from the firefighters’ book and always come to the aid of animals in need.”
