A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way to the brave members of the Evansville Fire Department, who leapt into action to save a dog from a frozen pond after receiving a harrowing call this past weekend. Fire Capt. Jon Grubb battled treacherous conditions and fell into the frigid water himself—but still managed to lift the dog out of the water to safety. The dog was examined by a veterinarian and is now recovering at home.
To thank the firefighters for their efforts, PETA is sending them a framed certificate, along with a box of vegan chocolates and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.
“This fire department’s courage and tenacity meant the difference between life and death for this little dog,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this will inspire others to take a page from the firefighters’ book and always come to the aid of animals in need.”
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” reminds all dog guardians to keep dogs on a comfortable and secure harness and leash when they’re outside and not to leave them unattended.
