Zebulon, N.C.

When Zebulon firefighters received a desperate call from 12-year-old Bryanna Schug—alerting them to the plight of her 8-year-old terrier, Brody, who had fallen into a frozen pond—they leapt into action. Battling the elements, the rescuers tied two ladders together and used a hook to draw Brody gently back to safety. He’s now resting at home with his guardians.

For its dedication to protecting all of Zebulon’s residents—no matter their species—PETA will send the Zebulon Fire Department a framed Compassionate Fire Department Award, along with a box of vegan chocolates and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.

“The undaunted courage of the Zebulon Fire Department and other rescuers involved meant the difference between life and death for this lucky dog,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA hopes the rescuers’ kindness and bravery will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—cautions all dog guardians to keep their animals on a comfortable and secure harness when taking them for walks and never to let them roam outdoors unsupervised.
