A Compassionate Action Award from PETA is on its way to Phoenix hot-air balloon operator Jason Elkins, who was giving a Valentine’s Day hot-air balloon ride when he spotted a small dog wandering in the Phoenix desert. After landing and seeing the dog’s exhausted limp, he scooped the animal up and flew him back to town. A veterinarian discovered that the little dog had been shot with a .22-caliber gun. Elkins decided to make the dog, whom he named Chase, a member of the family—and the animal may even join him for balloon rides once he has fully recovered from his injuries.
In recognition of Elkins’ high-flying rescue, PETA is sending him a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan chocolates, and some tasty treats for newly adopted Chase and Elkins’ other animal companions.
“Jason Elkins’ decisive actions meant the difference between life and death for a little dog who had been shot and callously left to die,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA hopes Jason’s kindness will inspire others always to come to the aid of animals in need.”
