With only a few layers of clothing protecting her from the frigid winter weather, a PETA activist will be chained inside a cramped, frigid doghouse outside City Hall for 12 hours on Thursday, flanked by a banner proclaiming, “Dogs Die of Cold. Keep Them Inside.” The demonstration comes just weeks after an 8-year-old dog in Kansas City lost nearly all her newborn puppies to subzero temperatures and had her leg amputated after being forced to give birth while chained up. Because no law prohibiting chaining exists in Kansas City, PETA is asking government officials to join the activist for just one hour as temperatures plummet.

Where:           City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., Kansas City

When:             From noon on Thursday, February 19, to midnight on Friday, February 20

“PETA is calling on City Hall to give every Kansas City dog serving a life sentence on a chain a reprieve—by enacting bylaws requiring guardians to bring them indoors in freezing weather,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Caring people everywhere can do their part by making dogs part of a loving family—and never leaving them chained in the backyard.”

Every year, PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—receives thousands of complaints about people who leave dogs and cats outside in the cold. Dogs and other animals can suffer from frostbite and exposure, and they can become dehydrated when water sources freeze. Cold weather spells extra hardship for “backyard dogs,” who often go without adequate food, water, shelter, or veterinary care.
