Young people are leading the animal rights charge, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the burgeoning number of young kids who are going vegan. That’s why PETA Kids, PETA’s division dedicated to children, is announcing its 2015 “Cutest Vegan Kids” contest. The first round, which began today, is open to anyone under 13, and everyone is welcome to nominate his or her favorite vegan kid. The two winners—one boy and one girl—will receive a trophy and a special prize pack filled with goodies. In addition, announcements will be sent to their hometown media outlets.

“PETA is recognizing young people who are already moving to the head of the pack with their decision to drop meat and dairy products,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All the kids who enter the contest are winners because they’ve made the switch to a healthier diet that’s animal- and Earth-friendly.”

More and more people are going vegan every year. In addition to the indisputable health benefits of ditching meat and other unhealthy animal products, vegans, on average, have a smaller carbon footprint than their meat-eating counterparts, and each vegan saves the lives of more than 100 animals each year.

The nomination round runs from today to March 4 and public voting to help PETA Kids determine who it should choose as finalists begins on March 9 and ends on March 25. Finalist voting to help PETA Kids determine who it should choose as the winners begins on March 30, and the two winners will be announced on April 13. PETA Kids, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” will select the winners based on several factors, including vote count. See the full contest details here.
