Colorful ‘Condoms’ to Ask D.C. Residents to Spay and Neuter on Eve of V-Day

With Valentine’s Day only a day away—and to mark National Condom Month and National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month—four PETA members dressed as giant pink, blue, yellow, and green condoms will brandish heart-shaped signs proclaiming, “Condoms Won’t Work: Fix Your Dog/Cat!” as they hand out leaflets on animal birth control in Columbia Heights on Friday.

“If cats and dogs could wear condoms, millions of animals would be spared suffering and death,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “But they can’t, so PETA is calling on their guardians to take responsibility and spay or neuter their animal companions.”

Between 6 and 8 million unwanted cats and dogs enter animal shelters every year in the U.S., and roughly half of them are euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. The solution, as recommended by PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is simple: Always spay or neuter your animal companion and never buy from a breeder or a pet store.
