Cache Brings Orcas to Sunset After Campaign Planning Meeting Interrupted as Car Enters the Building

When an SUV crashed through the windows at PETA’s Bob Barker Building on Sunset Boulevard just over a week ago, no one was hurt—but the crash interrupted a SeaWorld protest planning meeting. So it’s only fitting that the boards covering the hole in the building have been turned into an anti-SeaWorld mural, courtesy of Los Angeles graffiti legend Cache. The mural (photos and a time-lapse video of the painting are available) shows orcas swimming in the ocean alongside other whimsical animal figures proclaiming, “Hey, SeaWorld: Empty the Tanks!” and “Born to Be Wild.”

“PETA loves turning lemons into lemonade—and with Cache’s help, we’ve turned this accident into an eye-catching reminder that orcas belong in the ocean and that for keeping orcas in tanks, SeaWorld is the biggest lemon of them all,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “As people’s awareness of SeaWorld’s cruelty to orcas rises, SeaWorld’s ticket sales, stock, and sponsorship plummet.”

In nature, orcas travel up to 100 miles every day in their complex and closely knit family pods, but at SeaWorld, they’re housed in incompatible groups in tanks that, to them, are the size of a bathtub. Stress and aggression lead them to break their teeth by snapping and gnawing at pool gates, and they’re given psychotropic drugs to quell aggression. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—encourages caring people to visit only interactive parks that don’t condemn animals to a lifetime of suffering.
