On Monday morning, Troy firefighters rushed to the aid of a dog who had been trapped in the Great Miami River for more than 30 minutes, pulling her from the icy water and into the safety of a watercraft. The dog is now recovering at home, and the firefighters are in for a tasty surprise as PETA honors their lifesaving efforts with a Compassionate Fire Department Award, along with a box of delicious vegan chocolates.
“The Troy Fire Department’s dedication in saving Stella deserves a round of applause,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA hopes the firefighters’ willingness to jump into action will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—encourages all dog guardians to keep their animal companions safely on a leash and offers more tips for helping companion animals on its website. To help keep the members of the Troy Fire Department going strong for many years to come, PETA is also sending them a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying healthy by eating plant-based meals.
