Los Angeles is known for feeding consumers’ hunger for healthy, delicious vegan food, and Canoga Park–based Follow Your Heart and El Segundo–based Beyond Meat are no exception. That’s why both companies are taking home awards from peta2, PETA’s youth division, in the ninth annual Libby Awards. “Libby” is for “liberation”—as in animal liberation. Follow Your Heart has won the Libby for Best Vegan Cheese for its spicy, meltable Fiesta Blend Shreds, while the protein-rich Beyond Beef Feisty Crumble from Beyond Meat has nabbed the title of Best Vegan Meat. Put them together, and you’re well on your way to some award-winning nachos!
Visitors to peta2.com cast their votes to help peta2 decide whom it would choose as Libby Award winners. They also entered for a chance to win a giant Libby prize pack filled with goodies from last year’s winners, including a cookbook, personal-care products, and vegan treats.
“Beyond Meat and Follow Your Heart are making it easier than ever for young people to enjoy spicy, savory food that’s as delicious as it is kind to animals,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All of peta2’s winners and nominees deserve a round of applause because they’re inspiring young people across the country to get active for animals at the grocery store, at the mall, and at home.”
Other Libby Award categories include Best Use of Internet Stardom for Animals, Best Vegan Cosmetics Product, and Best New Vegan Food Item. Winners were chosen by peta2—whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”—based on several factors, including vote count.
