Alternative Music Makes Strong Showing in peta2’s Libby Awards

Young people are drawn more than ever to artists who reflect their animal-friendly values. That’s why peta2, PETA’s youth division, is recognizing two winners in music-related categories in the ninth annual Libby Awards. “Libby” is for “liberation”—as in animal liberation. Visitors to peta2.com cast their votes to help peta2 decide whom it would choose as Libby Award winners. They also entered for a chance to win a giant Libby prize pack filled with goodies from last year’s winners, including a cookbook, personal-care products, and vegan treats.

This year’s alternative-music winners include Chiodos vocalist Craig Owens, who nabbed the title of Hero of the Year to Animals for speaking out against the cruel imprisonment of orcas at SeaWorld. Most Animal-Friendly Band goes to The Ready Set, who invited peta2 out on tour this year to educate music fans about animal adoption and gave an exclusive acoustic performance and a video interview encouraging young people to adopt animals from shelters.

“These artists go above and beyond in spreading a caring message through their work—and in reaching out to younger fans who are eager to do more to help animals,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All of peta2’s winners and nominees deserve a round of applause because they’re inspiring young people across the country to get active for animals in every way they can.”

Other Libby Award categories include Best Use of Internet Stardom for Animals, Best Vegan Cosmetics Product, and Best New Vegan Food Item. Winners were chosen by peta2—whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”—based on several factors, including vote count.
