A cute PETA “cow” will greet attendees at the National Menorah lighting ceremony on Tuesday afternoon with holiday good wishes—and free vegan, kosher (pareve) chocolate gelt. PETA will be making the point that celebrating a vegan Hanukkah is easy as pie with so many meat-, egg-, and dairy-free kosher meals and snacks on the market today.
When: Tuesday, December 16, 3 p.m.
Where: The Ellipse, near the intersection of Constitution Avenue N.W. and 15th St. N.W., Washington
“Grocery shelves are brimming with delicious vegan milks, cheeses, and yogurts, so now is the perfect time to take dairy products off the table,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging everyone to think of cows as individuals, not as milk machines, both at the holidays and year-round.”
As PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” has documented on video, cows in today’s dairy industry are genetically manipulated and often drugged to produce up to four and a half times the amount of milk they naturally would to feed their calves. Their horns are burned or gouged out of their heads, part of their tails are cut off, and holes are punched through their ears—all without any painkillers. Most cows are never allowed to graze or spend any time outside, and most are slaughtered when their milk production wanes.
