This week, as a Hamilton woman pleaded guilty to failing to notify authorities that her husband had passed away—and that his corpse had been decomposing in the upstairs bedroom for six months—PETA is alerting nearby residents that corpses could be hidden in plain sight in other homes, particularly in kitchen refrigerators. PETA is negotiating with Hamilton-area advertisers to place a billboard that proclaims, “Are There Corpses in Your Home? Time to Go Vegan.”
“If you have chicken breasts, steaks, or bologna in your refrigerator, we have news for you: You’re sharing your home with corpses,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “People who are horrified, saddened, or surprised by the thought of cohabitating with a corpse should ask themselves how they can justify taking the lives of wonderful individuals who happen not to be human, and try going vegan.”
Every year, billions of animals have their bodies chopped up, labelled as this or that cut, and wrapped in cellophane for the supermarket meat case. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—encourages people to view all animals as living beings who experience love, fear, joy, and grief and who suffer immensely before they’re killed for food. Chickens and turkeys have their throats cut often while they’re still conscious; piglets have their tails cut off, often with no pain relief whatsoever; fish are cut open while they’re still alive on the decks of fishing boats; and calves are torn away from their mothers within hours of birth.
