Vegan 10th-Grader Promotes Kindness to Animals Through Art by Volunteering at Local Animal Shelter and More

If you’ve ever spotted an adorable animal rights–themed duct tape wallet, you may have seen the handiwork of Portland, Ore., native Phoebe Collver-Freeland, a vegan 10th-grader who’s been speaking up for animals since she was 11 years old. And now, Phoebe—along with scores of businesses, musicians, athletes, and others—is up for a Libby Award from peta2, PETA’s youth division. Now in its ninth year, the Libby Awards (“Libby” for “liberation,” as in animal liberation) includes a record 26 categories, and Phoebe may take home the award for Star Street Teamer of the Year. Visitors to peta2.com can cast their votes to help peta2 decide whom it should chose as the Libby Award winners and enter for a chance to win a giant Libby prize pack filled with goodies from last year’s winners, which includes a cookbook, grooming products, vegan treats, and more.
When Phoebe isn’t creating art, she can be found volunteering at her local animal shelter, encouraging her friends and classmates to go vegan, and serving on peta2’s Youth Advisory Board—a group of teenagers who help peta2 develop missions for its Street Team, which offers young people opportunities to get active for animals, such as posting pro-vegan messages on social media or speaking out against SeaWorld and other companies that hurt animals.
“From creating eye-catching leather-free wallets to lending a hand at the animal shelter, Phoebe radiates kindness to animals in everything she does,” says PETA Director of Youth Outreach and Campaigns Marta Holmberg. “All of peta2’s nominees are winners because they’re inspiring young people across the country to get active for animals every chance they get.”
Other Libby Award categories include Best Use of Internet Stardom for Animals, Best Vegan Makeover, and Best New Vegan Food Item. Voting ends on December 12 at 12 p.m. ET. Winners will be chosen by peta2—whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”—based on several factors, including vote count, and will be announced on December 16.
