Two naked PETA “orcas” painted in sleek black and white will take Macy’s to task on Thursday following news that this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will include a SeaWorld float—despite the park’s citations for repeated violations of the Animal Welfare Act and rapidly falling attendance. The “orcas” will protest in a cramped bathtub in front of Macy’s beside a banner that proclaims, “Take SeaWorld Orca Abuse Out of Macy’s Parade.”
When: Thursday, November 20, 12 p.m.
Where: 151 W. 34th St., 34th Street and Herald Square, New York
“Sponsors and parkgoers are dropping SeaWorld left and right as members of the public realize that it is unacceptable to confine orcas to barren tanks that, to them, are the size of a bathtub,” says PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel Delcianna Winders. “PETA is calling on Macy’s to follow the compassionate example of companies such as Southwest Airlines and Taco Bell and drop SeaWorld for good.”
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment,” encourages caring people to choose animal-free theme parks and activities. In the wild, orcas work cooperatively to find food, share intricate relationships, and traverse vast expanses of ocean every day. The orcas at SeaWorld are forced to perform circus-style tricks for food and are even sometimes given the drug diazepam to manage stress-induced and aggressive psychotic behavior. Following the release of Blackfish, attendance at SeaWorld parks dropped and the company was named one of the most hated in the U.S. in a Consumerist poll.
