A baby turkey crying, “Mommy! Mommy!” beside the motionless body of a cooked bird will soon greet Salt Lake City children as PETA unveils a bold new billboard aimed at sparking discussions between children and parents about compassion at the holiday table. PETA hopes to display the billboard—which urges youngsters to “[l]et everyone be with their family”—in four cities with some of the highest concentrations of children under 14.
“Children are naturally drawn to and love animals, and most would not eat turkey if they knew that the turkey centerpiece had been a real-life bird and part of a family and flock,” says mother and PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard asks families to choose the many mouthwatering and healthy vegan roasts and dishes available today.”
It’s estimated that more than 46 million turkeys will be killed for Thanksgiving and another 22 million for Christmas. Families who crave the taste of turkey without the cruelty and cholesterol can try delicious, protein-packed vegan roasts, including those made by Gardein, Field Roast, and Tofurky, which are widely available in supermarkets this holiday season. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—also offers recipes for delicious plant-based holiday meals, such as hearty casseroles and savory pot pies, on its website.
