Turkey Donation Drive Met With PETA Offer: 250 Vegan Roasts

Animal Rights Group Encourages Denver Rescue Mission to Dish Up Meat-Free Holiday Fare

When news hit that Christian charity Denver Rescue Mission was seeking 15,000 turkeys from the public to serve to needy families over the Thanksgiving holiday, PETA rushed to join in the spirit of giving with an offer of its own: 250 delicious and healthy vegan roasts. If the roasts are accepted, Denver’s homeless and hungry will have the opportunity to sit down to a mouthwatering meal with a side of holiday cheer that no one had to die for.

“These roasts are plentiful in protein and flavor with none of the cruelty or cholesterol found in turkey flesh,” says Sarah King, PETA’s director of Christian outreach. “PETA’s motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to eat,’ and we hope the Denver Rescue Mission will agree that compassion should be extended to all of God’s creatures.”

Before ending up as holiday centerpieces, turkeys are crammed by the thousands into dark sheds with no more than 3.5 square feet of space per bird. These gentle, intelligent animals are bred to grow as fast as possible, and they often become crippled under their own weight.
