$5,000 Reward Offered in Suspected Animal Sacrifice Case

Cat and Six Birds Found Dead in Echo Park—and Another Cat Is Missing

On Friday, the corpses of a cat, four pigeons, a crow, and a seagull were found arranged in a circle on Sunset Boulevard near Rosemont Avenue in Los Angeles. (Photos are available here.) Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the deaths of the animals, who may have been the victims of a satanic or other ritualistic killing—and PETA just received a report about a missing cat in the same neighborhood. That’s why PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this apparent crime, a likely violation of California’s anti-cruelty statute.

“At least seven animals have been found killed, meaning that all animals are in danger as long as the perpetrator is still at large,” says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. “PETA is urging anyone with any information to come forward immediately, and we’re cautioning all families to keep their animal companions indoors and in their sight at all times.”

On Friday, PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—offered an initial reward of $2,500. The group contacted local and state law-enforcement officials and has confirmed that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will investigate this case.
