With deer mating season in full swing and New Jersey deer on the move, one Franklin Lakes family has already taken PETA up on its offer of financial assistance to modify their spiked fence to be friendlier to deer (who often fatally impale themselves on spiked fences—especially during mating season). Another family is also working with PETA to retrofit their fence.
The Franklin Lakes Borough Council banned the construction of new spiked fences, but nearly 150 of these fences—which also pose a risk to children who attempt to climb them—already exist and have remained in place. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—established a $10,000 fund to help Franklin Lakes residents retrofit their spiked fences by removing the spikes, covering the spikes with caps, or installing bars along the top of the fences. Any homeowners who need advice or financial assistance should contact PETA at [email protected].
