Nearly Nude PETA Members to ‘Shower’ During People’s Climate March in New York

PETA will be at the People’s Climate March—on track to be the largest climate-change rally in history—with an eye-catching phalanx of 10 mobile showers, each with a nearly nude PETA supporter inside. The shower curtains read, “1 lb. of Meat Equals 180 Showers. Save the Planet. Go Vegan.” Dozens of PETA supporters will march alongside the showers with a banner that reads, “Meat: The Biggest Drain on the Earth.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—hopes to remind environmentalists that given the meat industry’s devastating impact on the environment, it’s impossible to “go green” without going vegan, especially in light of reports that a megadrought threatens to grip parts of the country as the result of climate change. It takes about 1,000 gallons of water to produce just 1 gallon of milk and 2,500 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of beef. Each vegan conserves an estimated 600 gallons of water every day. And it’s not just water usage that’s affected. The meat industry is a major producer of carbon emissions that contribute to climate change and, according to the United Nations, is “a top contributor to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.”
